Today's events...

S510 passed the senate today and is sent to the house for action... If they like the bill they can vote to pass it and it could go to the president for approval within the week...

Insert cog here...the house passed their own food safety bill...H.R. 2749 which is much more comprehensive than S510...so if the house likes their bill better, which they probably do... then the bills have to go to reconciliation... This could take weeks or months to accomplish anything!

Most House democrats appear to be mostly satisfied with the senate version and want to push this through during the lame duck session... Republicans do not feel as if this bill is dire enough to consider at this time and will fight to keep it out of the lame duck session so it can be taken up by the much more conservative house next session...

Tester Amendment Proposed

Senator Jon Tester from Montana proposed an amendment to S. 510 which would exempt most small businesses who's direct sales (to consumers and local restaurants) exceed their sales to distributors AND whose annual sales total fewer than $500,000 (adjusted for inflation).  This amendment still requires farms receiving the exemption under the amendment to "include prominently and conspicously...the name and business address of the facility where the food was manufactured or processed," either on food lables or at the point of purchase.  Additionally, the new amendment will permit the FDA to revoke this exemption in the event of a food outbreak directly linked to the facility or to protect the public health.

Bridgeport FFA First Contest

Well folks, contest time is drawing near.  We present Monday at Gainsville at 1:30 P.M.  We have done multiple presentations in the last week.  We have presented to The Community Bank, The Bridgeport Economic Development Group and several managers from local fast food restaurants.  Outside of the community, we spoke with Cultivate Agency in Justin.  They help mostly agricultural businesses with PR and growing their businesses.  Additionally, we were fortunate enough to speak with staff members at U.S. Representative Kay Granger and Joe Barton's offices.

We have learned so much this week, and look forward to competing on Monday.  Thanks so much to everyone for the help and for reading this blog.  If you have any questions about the issue, please feel free to post them and give us practice answering them!
